Twelve ms letters (November 1944 - March 1945 but many undated, 36pp) written to his mother in London while serving with the Royal Corps of Signals (RCS) in Egypt with the 3rd Company, 3rd GHQ Signals, MEF, giving news of home, his activities and mutual acquaintances; commenting on his journey to and adjustment to life in Egypt with the 2nd Company, Royal Signals Base Depot and School MEF, the dangers of going out alone even in broad daylight, the lack of mail, the weather, the assassination and funeral of the Egyptian Prime Minister (March 1945), playing football, being in hospital with fever, sight seeing at the Giza pyramids, his demobilization Group (55), his girlfriends, playing the part of a girl in a show, the people he has met, making friends with an Egyptian family, visiting the cinema and seeing cycle races in Cairo, singing in the choir of the catholic St Josephs Cathedral and eating a "proper Indian dinner" afterwards at the Indian YMCA, and that "you may be surprised to know that all these pals of mine are coloured, but damn fine chaps, in fact any mother would be very proud of them"; and mentioning Lord Moyne.
