Scrapbook of documents kept by Colonel J W E R Gainher OBE relating to his attendance with the HQ, 4th Lines of Communications Sub Area at the Big Three Conference held at Potsdam in July 1945, including the signatures of attendees (3pp), notably Harry S Truman, Clement Attlee, Brigadier O M Wales and Joan Bright; the Top Secret administrative map (colour, 1p) of the City of Berlin, showing its division into three sectors (UK, USA and USSR), which later had to be rewritten to include a French sector; two ts newspaper clippings (The Illustrated London News, August 1945, 3pp) of Winston Churchill's visit to Berlin, visiting the ruined Berlin Chancellory with Anthony Eden and taking the salute in the great parade ground of Berlin (the Charlottenburger Chaussée) as the Grenadier Guards march past, and of the new Prime Minister, Clement Attlee inspecting the Scots Guards at the Potsdam Conference; a newspaper clipping (no date, 1p) of Anthony Eden being met on arrival at Berlin Airport by Major General L O Lyne, GOC British Troops in Berlin, and M Vyshinsky, the Soviet Deputy Kommissar for Foreign Affairs; the letterhead of the Prime Minister's Office at 10 Downing Street in Whitehall (undated, 1p); the ts Layout (map) of the Potsdam Area with details of VIP Security for the Houses of the PM, Eden and Attlee and Security Control Communications (July 1945, 2pp) and a diagram (July 1945, 1p) of the British portion of the Central Conference Building for Operation TERMINAL; a pass (June 1945, 1p) in English and Russian issued to Lieutenant Colonel Gainher and an unused pass (undated, 1p) to the British Delegation Area both issued for Operation TERMINAL, the Tripartite Conference by the HQ, 4th L of C Sub Area; ts invitations to a Terminal Dance to be held at the Red Cross Ballroom, Elstree (July 1945, 1p) and to drinks at the HQ, 4th L of C Sub Area, 11 Ludwig Strasse (July 1945, 1p); a ts letter from Joan Bright, British Administrative Office (July 1945, 1p) inviting Gainher to be an Honorary member of the Messes of the British Delegation Administrative Staff "for the duration of the Conference"; 14 photographs of Gainher, the GOC (Brigadier O M Wales), staff and HQ of 4th L of C Sub Area at Potsdam (August 1945, 15pp) and 6 photographs of Operation TERMINAL (undated, 6pp), notably of Winston Churchill in Berlin and Anthony Eden being met by Major General Lyne and Vyshinsky at Berlin Airport. Also included are a Secret and Personal ts letter (January 1946, 1p) from Montgomery at HQ, BAOR, informing Gainher that his command, 30th Battalion The Loyal Regiment, is to be disbanded because "to meet the effects of the release scheme, it has become necessary to reduce the number of units in this theatre"; a photograph (1p) of Field Marshal Viscount Montgomery and 3 postcards of the Church at Longueville (undated, 3pp).
