A privately printed biography (41pp) written by family and colleagues, covering his civilian life and military career (September 1914 - February 1919) with the 11th Battalion Princess Louise's (Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders) (45th Brigade, 15th Division) (September 1914 - July 1918) and later the 1/8th Battalion Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders (July 1918 - February 1919) and covering in emotional detail his experiences in training at Aldershot (September 1914 - July 1915), his work as a Battalion Machine Gun Officer during the Battle of Loos (May - October 1915), a heroic raid he organized along the Hohenzollern Redoubt where wooden dolls were used to distract the Germans (July 1916), his work on the Somme near Martinpuich where he was seriously wounded during the advance on 15 September 1916 and for which he was awarded the Military Cross, his promotion to Major and return to the Battalion as second in command (May 1917), his duties at 3rd Ypres where he was ordered to lead a disastrous attack which contributed to the dissolution of the Battalion (August 1917), his continued work on the Ypres front for which he was awarded the DSO, his promotion to Lieutenant Colonel and appointment to command of the 1/8th Battalion when it was amalgamated with the 11th (June 1918), his involvement in an attack on Soissons for which he was awarded the Croix de Guerre (July 1918) and his death from bronchopneumonia (February 1919).
