Ts extracts (total 65pp) from his memoirs covering his employment as an office boy in London before and during the Second World War and his service (eventually as an LAC) in the RAFVR, November 1941 - June 1946, with references to his training at RAF Padgate near Warrington and at Blackpool, postings to RAF Manston, RAF Tangmere and other stations in southern England and after training at Cranwell, as an RDF Operator to RAF Great Orme, North Wales, until posted overseas in July 1943 to Ceylon and (in the summer of 1945) to India where he served until demobilisation in mid 1946, with useful details of his voyage out from England, vivid descriptions of his life in Ceylon and India and interesting references to his growing political awareness and membership of the Commonwealth Party together with 186 ms letters to him from his father, written July 1943 - May 1946, concerned mainly with domestic and family matters but with excellent references also to civilian conditions, the destruction of the family home in Mitcham, South London, by a Vi in June 1944 and the subsequent difficulties in securing accommodation in Bedfordshire and postwar, in Mitcham, as well as details of his war damage claims, the General Election campaign of 1945 and life in austerity Britain, 1945 - 1946; also 38 ms letters from his mother (August 1943 - May 1944 with contemporary photograph), 22 ms letters from his sister, Doris Smith (October 1943 - January 1946) mentioning civilian conditions during and after the war and 105 ms letters from his sister, May (August 1943 - May 1946) with useful references to the damage and casualties caused in Mitcham by V1s in 1944, civilian conditions, her keen interest in popular music and films and her war work at a ball bearings factory in Luton (1944 - 1945).
