24 ms letters (96pp) written home to his mother while serving as a subaltern with the 1st Battalion The Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders (1st Brigade, 1st Division) on the Western Front, January - February 1915, containing references to casualties sustained by his regiment, his arrival at Le Havre, the sensation of coming under intense enemy shell fire as he escorted a draft of new troops to the front line, the censorship of mail, and the expensive nature of service in France for officers; then as a captain with the 2nd Battalion Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders (81st Brigade, 27th Division) and the 1st Garrison Battalion in Salonika, January - August 1917, where he describes the voyage out to Macedonia and his duties there, the posting home of tortoises, the climate, landscape and difficulties involved in travelling, gas training, the novelty of a bath, his battalion's journey north to the front line in the Doiran sector, billets and food rations and the regular surrender of Bulgar soldiers; and finally as a Captain seconded to the 2/89th Punjab Regiment, Indian Army in Quetta, India, October 1917.
