Excellent ts memoir (45pp), incorporating extracts from the journal he kept during October 1951 - June 1952 whilst serving in Korea as a 2nd Lieutenant with the 1st Battalion The Royal Leicestershire Regiment (on National Service) (29th Infantry Brigade, 1st Commonwealth Division), giving a lively account of his arrival in Pusan and readying his platoon for action at Britannia Camp, descriptions of fellow-officers in C Company, posting on the `Wyoming' line and first taste of battle (attack on Point 217, November 1951), a patrol, taking over a position from the South Koreans, protection against winter conditions, further enemy-contact patrols, operations at Hill 163 and Hill 161 during December, rest and recuperation in Japan, and a steady succession of fire-fights with Chinese troops in spring and summer of 1952, conveying most graphically the ever-present hazards of shelling and mines; illustrated with photographs and colour copies of various documents (Holmes was awarded the MC in 1952). The collection includes two printed booklets entitled 'Materiel in the hands of or possibly available to the enemy in Korea' and 'Mines and booby traps used in Korea', both containing ms additions written by Holmes.
