Interesting collection of papers relating to his service with the RAF, initially as an apprentice clerk, but later as a Sergeant pilot, flying operations with No. 49 Squadron, RAF Bomber Command, and his capture after being shot down over Holland in August 1940. He was imprisoned initially at Dulag Luft (Frankfurt), then at Stalag Luft 1 (Barth) (September 1940 - September 1941), at Stalag VIIIB (Lamsdorf) (September 1941 - May 1942), Stalag Luft III (Sagan) (May - June 1941), Stalag Luft VI (Heydekrug) (June 1943- July 1944) Stalag 357 (Thorn, later at Fallingbostel) (July 1944 until their liberation in April 1945). The collection consists of ts notes (23pp) on his training and operational flying and his experiences as a prisoner of war; his flying log book, certificate of service and discharge, service and release book and medical card; YMCA log containing paintings, notes, poems and songs; a Red Cross map of the principal prisoner of war camps in Europe and other Red Cross notices and letters relating to missing personnel and POWs; various warning notices issued to POWs in the camps; correspondence relating to the award of his DFM in August 1943 and to his being reported missing and later confirmed as a POW.
