Papers retained by a subaltern in the 21st Light Anti-Aircraft (LAA) Regiment, Royal Artillery (RA), relating to his time as a prisoner of war in Tandjong Priok camp, Java (March - October 1942), his voyage on the Japanese transport SINGAPORE MARU to Japan (November 1942) and his time in Ube (November 1942 - July 1945) and Motoyama camps (July - August 1945) in Japan, including an ms nominal roll (4pp) of other rank prisoners of war in (?) Ube or Motoyama; some 30 letters and postcards sent to him from the United Kingdom between June 1943 and June 1945 and marked with their eventual date of receipt in Japan; costume drawings, photographs and a programme relating to a production of 'Babes in the Wood' at Ube on 1 January 1945; photographs of groups of officers and camp scenes taken immediately following their liberation; some Japanese picture postcards; and a ts memoir, with extensive ms amendments (18pp), written in 1992 and commenting in particular on the surrender of the Allied forces in Java, the mentality of the Japanese and its effects on their attitude towards prisoners of war, the boredom and uncertainty of life in captivity, the appalling conditions on board the SINGAPORE MARU, the bombing of Ube camp by American aircraft, the prisoners' actions following the news of Japan's unconditional surrender and the wonderful kindness shown to them by the Americans during their repatriation.
