Description
Object description
Ts transcript (52pp) of a narrative written as a prisoner of war in Java covering the formation and deployment of the 48th LAA Regiment RA in southern England (July 1940 - December 1941); their passage, principally on the troopships DUCHESS OF ATHOLL and DUNERA, via South Africa to Java (December 1941 - February 1942); the deployment of the Regiment's three Batteries on aerodrome defence in Java, the anti-aircraft defence of Tandjong Priok docks and, initially, on similar duties in Sumatra; and their operations during the campaign in which one of their airfields was overrun and another evacuated before the surrender of the Allied forces on 8 March 1942. Macartney-Filgate, who was the 2nd in command of the Regiment up to 2 March when he took over command, is critical in his narrative about the absence of ground defence schemes for the airfields in Java and Sumatra and, more particularly, about the total lack of organisation and communication apparent among the Allied forces at every stage of the campaign.
