Notebook containing ms copies (75pp), in his mother's hand, of the letters written by a Lieutenant RAF to his family between March and September 1919 covering his passage in the transport HMT STEPHEN from Grimsby to Murmansk (March), his voyage in an ice breaker across the White Sea to Archangel (April - May) and his service as a pilot with No 4 Squadron RAF on the Dvina River and other fronts in North Russia, including bombing and reconnaissance flights over territory held by the Bolsheviks and ferrying senior officers between locations (May - August). The letters include some interesting descriptions of living conditions and the climate in North Russia, his views on the Russian people and his reflections on British reactions to the Allied intervention in Russia, and the notebook also contains some contemporary photographs and examples of a few Bolshevik banknotes.
