Photostat copy of his ts memoirs (82pp) covering his decision to enlist, at the age of 18, in September 1915; his Army training at Newcastle-upon-Tyne; and his service as a gunner in an 18-pdr Battery in 80th Brigade Royal Field Artillery (RFA) (17th Division) on the Western Front from November 1915 until he was wounded in late July 1916, including operations on the Bluff in early 1916 and on the Somme during the offensive; and from January 1917 as a gunner in another 18-pdr Battery (241st Brigade RFA, 48th Division) which served through the German retreat to the Hindenburg Line, the Third Battle of Ypres (July - October 1917) and was in Italy from late 1917 until the Armistice, taking part in the Battles of Piave (June 1918) and of the Vittorio Veneto (November 1918). Throughout his narrative, and especially in the chapter on Third Ypres, Heraty hints at the lasting effects of the horrors and discomforts of war on a young and impressionable man.
