Ms diary (4pp) describing the mobilisation of the cadets at the Royal Naval College Dartmouth on 1 August 1914; ms Midshipman's Journal (56pp) covering his service in the Channel Fleet battleship HMS PRINCE OF WALES on patrol and escort duties in the English Channel, August 1914 - March 1915, and including references to the sinking of the battleships HMS BULWARK and HMS FORMIDABLE; two ms diaries (77pp and 66pp), the latter with photographs, recording his service as a midshipman in HMS PRINCE OF WALES in the British Adriatic Squadron based on Taranto, August - November 1915 and January - March 1917, including a reference to the dismissal in February 1917 of the Duke of Abruzzi as C-in-C Italian Navy; ms list (34pp) of his fellow officers from August 1914 - October 1926; two ms letters (22pp in all) describing his experiences as Gunnery Officer of the cruiser HMS DAUNTLESS when protecting British interests in China during the civil war there, March - May 1927; miscellaneous papers and correspondence as Executive Officer of HMS SOUTHAMPTON (2nd Cruiser Squadron, Home Fleet) from March 1937 - November 1938; photocopies of two articles (8pp and 12pp) concerning his command of the cruiser HMS ARGONAUT, 1942 - 1945, with particular reference to her voyage to the United States in April 1943 for repair after being torpedoed by a U-boat, together with related newspapers and presscuttings, a 1p ts personal letter from Harold Macmillan, January 1943 and a few other items; and various post Second World War papers including correspondence relating to the Anzac landing at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915 and an ms letter (3pp), dated June 1982, from the captain of the frigate HMS ARGONAUT describing her part in the Falklands conflict.
