129 ms and ts letters mainly written by Montgomery between March 1942 and December 1970, notably while GOC-in-C South-Eastern Command until August 1942, and principally to Lieutenant Colonel Trumbull Warren, Montgomery's Canadian ADC and Personal Assistant, mostly concerned with personal matters and increasingly, in the years following the war, the arrangements for Montgomery's frequent visits to Canada and the USA but also making references to Canadian Army training and exercises in Britain during summer 1942; Canadian Army personalities; the Battle of El Alamein; the poor quality of Eisenhower as a military strategist; the fitness for high command of Canadian generals Crerar, McNaughton and Simonds and his desire to be sent cheese, a very favourite food of his, from Canada in the immediate post war years. There are also letters to Warren's mother and his wife, Mary; letters from Montgomery to other individuals; copies of a few letters from Warren to Montgomery and one letter from Lieutenant General Guy Simonds to Warren concerning Montgomery's opinion of General Patton. Montgomery often informs the Warren family of his affection for them and that he regards Warren as a close friend.
