Photocopy of well written ts account (141pp written ca 1989) describing his voluntary enlistment while working in Sheffield with Scottish Provident Assurance, training in England with the RAOC, transfer to the 1st Battalion Tower Hamlets Rifles (9th Battalion The Rifle Corps), the voyage to Egypt in HMT DUCHESS OF ATHOLL (October 1940), service as a lance corporal in North Africa (January 1941, 3rd Armoured Brigade, 2nd Armoured Division), particularly around Benghazi, Libya (February - April 1941), his capture near Mechili (April 1941), imprisonment in Benghazi and Tripoli, transportation to Italy, in camps at Capua, Fonte d'Amore (Sulmona) and Chieti, events around the Italian Armistice, imprisonment in Germany in camps at Moosburg, Altengrabow and Fallingbostel, the forced march west in 1945, liberation and repatriation, giving useful details about billets, POW life, especially Red Cross parcels, selfishness and equality, working parties, meeting concentration camp victims, good treatment by Italians, German maltreatment of Russian POWs and the effect on family life of being a POW.
