Photocopy of a detailed, anonymous ms account (28pp) of the movements of the 1st Battalion East Lancashire Regiment (11th Brigade, 4th Division), July - September 1914, describing its mobilisation and the arrival of its reservists in Colchester, the move via Harrow and Southampton to Havre, the journey by rail from there to Le Cateau arriving on 24 August, the Retreat from Mons including (with further details in an appendix) the battalion's rearguard action near Ligny during the Battle of Le Cateau on 26 August, the difficulty of crossing the River Marne, eventually doing so in boats, and finally the crossing of the River Aisne, including details of the death of its Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel L St G Le Marchant DSO, during the Battle of the Marne, the condition of the civilian refugees passed during the Retreat and several references to the actions of Brigadier General (later Lieutenant General Sir) Aylmer Hunter Weston, commander of the 11th Brigade.
