Photocopy of ts edited transcript (77pp) of diary and extracts from letters (April 1917 - August 1919) interspersed with historical notes by the editor, giving a vivid account of: his voyage to German East Africa, via South Africa, in HMT MEDIC (April - May 1917), as a sapper with the Royal Engineer Signals, his service and experiences during the campaign in GEA (May - December 1917), largely as part of General Deventer's No 2 Column, during the advance against the German forces under Tafel from Kilwa to Mingoyo near Lindi, including the fighting at Narumgombe (July 1917), and his subsequent experiences, including transportation in apalling conditions in HMT HYMETTUS to Dar Es Salaam (February 1918) and later service, largely spent recuperating from illnesses in Uganda (until December 1918) and South Africa (until August 1919). The papers contain many educated comments on ethnographic and topographical matters.
