July 1941; as Intelligence Officer, 24th Guards Brigade, North Africa, March - December 1943, and Italy, December 1943 - January 1944; attendance at the Staff College, Camberley, (?) April - (?) July 1944; with the 5th Battalion Grenadier Guards, Italy, August - September 1944; as GSO2, 78th Division, Italy, September 1944 - March 1945; and as Brigade Major, 24th Guards Brigade, Italy, March 1945 - January 1946; and with pungent comments on Army life, the politics and strategy of the war, the obstinate German resistance, relations with the French, Italians and Yugoslavs, and the visits of King George VI, Winston Churchill and Sir Anthony Eden (June 1943).
