An interesting collection of 36 ms letters, 2 ms transcripts of letters, 2 postcards and 1 telegram to his family in Highgate, North London briefly covering his training as a cadet at the RMA Sandhurst (August-(?)October 1914) and his time with the 3rd Battalion Wiltshire Regiment at Weymouth (November 1914) and recording in more detail his service as a subaltern in the 2nd Battalion Wiltshire Regiment (7th Division) on the Western Front from December 1914 until just before his death in action, at the age of 17, in the Battle of Neuve Chapelle in March 1915. The letters, which are accompanied by 2 photographs and 11 ms letters of condolence from fellow officers and others, include good descriptions of a visit to a German prisoner of war and internment camp in Surrey, the appalling conditions in the trenches in the first winter of the war, his experiences on night patrols in No Man's Land and his participation in the Christmas Truce, as well as expressions of opinions about his fellow officers and the high morale of the men under very adverse conditions.
