4 very detailed pocket diaries for January 1916 - March 1918, together with 33 letters to his fiancee, covering his decision to leave the Bank of England and enlist (July 1915 - March 1916), his training as a cadet in the 2/28th Battalion London Regiment (Artist's Rifles) and No 15 Officer Cadet Battalion in Romford, Essex (April - November 1916) including an eye-witness account of the destruction of Zeppelin SL11 by Lieutenant Leefe Robinson VC, his service in London as a subaltern in the 5th Battalion Grenadier Guards (December 1916 - July 1917), his crossing to France (August 1917), his service as a platoon commander in the 1st Grenadier Guards (Guards Division) including the first attack on Passchendaele in the Third Ypres (September 1917 - January 1918) and then in the 3rd Guards Brigade Trench Mortar Battery (January - March 1918) and his time in the Duchess of Westminster's Hospital, Le Touquet, France (April 1918) after being wounded in the German spring offensive; together with an album containing examples of British and foreign postcards, French and Belgian banknotes, recruiting pamphlets, presscuttings and other mementoes of the 1914 - 1918 War as well as a good selection of Army forms and letters covering his own service; two similar albums compiled by his fiancee who was a VAD at the National Hospital in London (1916 - 1918); several personal letters to him from old school friends (notably one in the 4th Dragoon Guards in France in 1914 - 1915) and fellow officers and men; and a number of loose documents, presscuttings, photographs, and items of printed ephemera, including souvenirs of the Armistice.
