text: L'AISNE DÉVASTÉE
ŒUVRE DE GUERRE POUR LA RECONSTITUTION DES FOYERS DÉTRUITS
L'APPEL

[Devastated Aisne. War charity for the reconstruction of homes that have been destroyed. The Appeal. Brother, look and read: fortune has
remained peacefully seated at your hearth!...and Aisne has been devastated by the Germans! Oh Poverty! Oh Grief! Oh Mourning! A heart of
marble would be softened! Look: not a stone left standing in the village, not a tree in the forest! Not a man left in the cowshed, no
Virgin in the Chapel, no nest on the roof... See this widow with her two children: I remind you that it is for you! Open your safes and
your humble purses, donations are needed! You have gold or coppers left in your pockets: we are waiting! Subscriptions are accepted at the

Steinlen's war posters deal principally with the homeless, the starving, refugees and prisoners of war. It is
interesting to compare these posters with, for example, the bright poster advertising bicycles which Steinlen did before the war, in the
tradition of Jules Cheret and Toulouse-Lautrec. He was one of the artists already well-established in pre-war France and is one whose war
work is most consistently good.
