The evacuation from Dunkirk on the French coast was hailed in Britain as an extraordinary achievement and the ‘little ships of Dunkirk’ swiftly entered the mythology of wartime brave deeds.

On board the SS RIGHTO, a fishing trawler operating from Grimsby in Lincolnshire, the Third Hand, J W Barber, ties the codend (the tapered end of the net where the fish is held), as the skipper, 67-year-old George Burgess, examines the catch.
