Object description

image: View across a beach with an Army observer with binoculars and a party of spectators

In the New Year of 1944, Gross was commissioned to paint the 50th Northumbrian Division preparing for D-Day in East Anglia with the 1st US Infantry Division. He held a high regard for the officers he was drawing. In a letter to Mr E. C. Gregory of the War Artist's Advisory Committee on 17 September 1944, Gross stated that these portraits should hang next to his images of Normandy because, 'They are the HEROES and ACTORS presented to the public before the CURTAIN goes up.'
