Description
Four large tablets of Sicilian marble. The upper three tablets, commemorating the First World War casualties, are surrounded by a mosaic border and opus sectile, in moulded and carved alabaster frames. . The central one, bearing the commemorative inscription, incorporates the Stalybridge Coat of Arms; the two large tablets that flank it each incorporate a cast copper panel in low relief (St George slaying the dragon on the left panel, and St Michael with cross and sword on right panel), beneath which the names of the WW1 casualties are incised and painted. Beneath the central tablet of the WW1 section is a rectangular tablet that commemorates the Second World War casualties. Made to match the WW1 tablets, this too has a carved frame and green mosaic border; its central panel has the incised and painted inscription.
