Description
Italian-white-marble obelisk on a two-stepped square base of Whatstandwell stone, which is set within a square of cobblestones and paving enclosed by iron railings. The paved area beyond the railings is bordered by a pair of freestanding walls and pillars, each of which has an inscribed plaque attached. The column of the obelisk's 6 o'clock face has a relief-carved laurel wreath; the plinth below bears the dedicatory inscription in capital black lettering, beneath which is a relief-carved frieze of crossed rifle, sword and standard. The obelisk's other three faces record the names of WW1 casualties in lead lettering; the 12 o'clock face also includes the names of WW2 casualties. The pair of associated plaques on the nearby pillars list the names of additional WW1 and WW2 casualties whose names had not been included on the obelisk*. [*N.B. These supplementary plaques were added to the site in August 2010, following extensive research by Mr Richard Dodge that identified 62 WW1/WW2 casualties who, for various reasons, had not been included on the obelisk. Evidently, however, when the plaques were manufactured, the two lists of names were inadvertently transposed ; i.e. the 12 WW2 casualties were listed on the plaque headed 'The Fallen (1914)...', and the 50 WW1 casualties were listed on the plaque headed 'When you go home...(Kohima Epitaph)'].

History
August 2010: Following extensive research by local historian Mr Richard Dodge, a pair of associated new plaques were erected on the pillars near the obelisk, bearing the names of 50 WW1 and 12 WW2 casualties who were omitted from it.// 4/8/2006: The obelisk was Grade II Listed (Entry Number 1391721), at which time the obelisk was described as being 'surrounded by a chain link fence and to its rear is a low brick wall'. (On an unknown date since - possibly in 2010? - the chain-link fence has been replaced by iron railings).// 1978: The obelisk and surrounding cobblestones were moved to their more prominent current position on Plumptre Way.// c1946: WW2 casualties' names were added to the obelisk.// 27th March 1921: Obelisk unveiled on a plot of land near the Cemetery Chapel, off Church Street.
