LOWTHER/ TOWNWARDENS./ CAST AT HOLWELL WORKS 1988 West wall plaque: The York slabs on the Upper Terrace originally formed the platform of The Great Northern Station on/ Scalford Road, Melton Mowbray./ The Station was opened on 1 September 1879, closed on 7 December 1953 and the line closed in 1964. When the/ Station was demolished in 1967, these slabs were stored in the Pinetum at Egerton Park until the mid 1980's when/ they were reused in the rear covered area at the Carnegie museum. In 2009 major extensions to the Museum took/ place and Leicestershire County Council donated these York slabs to Melton Mowbray Town Estate to be used on/ the Upper Terrace at the War memorial./ The Upper Terrace is used by local dignitaries and representatives of the Service and ex-service community for/ wreath laying ceremonies on Remembrance Sunday, Battle of Britain and at some other times. It is appropriate,/ that when gathered to honour our fallen heroes at the War Memorial, we would be standing on the very slabs that/ some of those who did not return may have stood during their embarkation./ "At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them" East wall plaque: (Melton Mowbray town crest) MELTON MOWBRAY TOWN ESTATE/ This plaque was unveiled by/ H.M.
