Description
White marble Chattri mounted on a large granite platform base and surrounded by a paved area and low wall, with stairs leading up to it. The Chattri is a traditional Indian temple design with a domed roof. Three granite tablets on which Indian soldiers were cremated have been mounted at the foot of the stairs. A Commonwealth War Grave Commission white stone wall is located alongside the Chattri commemorating the names of 53 Indian soldiers who died of wounds in Brighton Hospitals.

1946: Memorial repaired by War Office, following damage due to being located in a live firing range. 2014: Sussex Police plan to donate £1,000 to the Chattri memorial Group towards its commemoration service to remember Indian troops who died in the First World War

  • Local Publication/Booklet 'The Chattri Memorial Service' Patcham British Legion reinstituted the Pilgrimage in 1950 and continued it until 1999. In 2000 responsibility passed to a local Sikh teacher with the Undivided Indian Ex-Services Association.
