47 ms letters (343pp) written by him to his family (June 1915 - July 1918) during his service with 6th Battalion Seaforth Highlanders (51st Highland Division) on the Western Front, covering in particular the action at Beaumont Hamel in the taking of 'Y Ravine' on the River Ancre (November 1916) and at Arras (May 1917) and including notes on his training and rapid promotion from private to officer, and his experience in various hospitals in France and the UK following wounds sustained in the trenches; together with a ts account (7pp) of his experiences as a youth in Hartlepool during its bombardment by German battle cruisers (December 1914) and other papers related to his service during the First World War. Also with the collection are four boxes of files containing ts and ms correspondence, reports, notes, printed leaflets and publications (1939 - 1945) covering his role as Assistant Director of Mechanisation of 'TT3' under the Ministry of Supply, related to the repair of government vehicles, providing good details of the administration of the department and the co-ordination of army auxiliary and civilian workshops.
