122 ms letters and postcards, May - November 1917, written while serving with the 5th Battalion Rifle Brigade in England (May - July) at Winchester, Sheerness, and Minster on the Isle of Sheppey, proceeding to a camp in Le Havre (September 1917) joining the 11th Battalion Rifle Brigade (59th Brigade, 20th Division) and serving as a rifleman on the Western Front until he was killed in action in November 1917, giving brief details of his training, the crossing to France and impressions of the French and their way of life, the devastation of the French countryside and towns, and life and conditions in the trenches, but largely discussing personal and domestic news which provides a useful commentary on his anxiety about his family at home in London and their financial difficulties. Together with a photocopy (50pp) of ts extracts from the letters compiled by his son with appropriate explanatory annotations and 8 comic illustrations drawn by him in 1915 and a copy of ts letter from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (August 1989) concerning his death.
