Nine documents (10pp), March 1940 - July 1947, relating to the service of S D Hughes as a Corporal in the RAF and as a POW of the Japanese having been captured on Sumatra, March 1942, including: a Field Service Post Card, March 1940; a Christmas Card, No 84 Squadron, RAF, Iraq, 1941; his Record of Work, Camp 2, Hakodate Camp, Hokkaido Island, Japan, nd; a letter from the War Organisation of the British Red Cross Society and Order of St John of Jerusalem, May 1943, informing his father that he is a POW in Japanese hands; a letter from King George VI, September 1945, welcoming him home; two telegrams, October 1945, on his arrival in Melbourne, Australia; Post Card from the Major, Reeves and Councils of Greater Victoria (Vancouver Island), British Columbia, Canada, on his repatriation, nd; and a letter from the Judge Advocate General, London, July 1947, concerning the Japanese War Crimes and enquiring if he is the British POW named Corporal Hughes (he was) who was beaten up at Hakodate Area Main Camp by a Japanese civilian guard named Saito (nick-named "Billy Bennett").
