History
In 2017 the names of five further WW1 casualties were added to the memorial (Frank Lewis, William Howell, Edmund Thomas, Thomas Thomas and Rowland Parry Thomas). The Remembrance Day service at the memorial on 11/11/2017 included a 'dedication to those who gave their lives'. In 2013 the memorial was dismantled and reconstructed following concerns about its structural stability. The War Memorials Trust (WMT) offered a grant of £2,290 towards this remedial work (WMT Grant Reference Number: WM2758). The name of a further WW1 casualty (Benjamin Hayward R.N.) was added to the memorial at that time./ The memorial was unveiled and dedicated on 18/5/1921.

  • The Cowbridge GEM 2/11/2017 reported that: 'Cowbridge's 'Forgotten Sons' added to war memorial. There was much interest outside Cowbridge Town Hall today when the base of the town’s war memorial was shielded by tarps and fencing. The reason, as readers of recent editions of The GEM my surmise, was the addition of the five missing names, one of whom served in the Canadian Army, of Cowbridge’s fallen from World War One. The five are: Frank Lewis, William Howell, Edmund Thomas, Thomas Thomas and Rowland Parry Thomas. Their brief lives, service and deaths are being recorded in The GEM by local historian David Howell. The tarps were pulled back to reveal the work taking place today by masons and engravers Tom Saluk and Lukasz Inielinski of The War Memorial Restoration Company. In 2013, the firm completed the renovation and restoration of the Cowbridge Memorial. Mr Saluk said: "We go all over the UK and Europe restoring all kinds of memorials, but the war memorials are special".' www.cowbridge-today.co.uk/article.cfm?id=116664&headline=Cowbridge's 'Forgotten Sons' added to war memorial&sectionIs=news&searchyear=2017
