What age do I need to be to Volunteer at IWM?
All of our roles are currently for those aged 18+
How much time do I need to give?
We encourage volunteers to do one shift a week but It’s up to you. It might be once a week or more, once or twice a month, whatever suits you and in agreement with your place of volunteering.
What recruitment checks do you carry out?
All of our volunteers are vetted. We use an external company called Vero to undertake basic DBS checks. You will be required to produce relevant ID documents for these checks.
What training and support will I receive?
For all of our roles you will receive relevant training (typically this takes place over 2 days) and there are regular opportunities to top up and do additional training as your volunteering journey progresses.
You certainly won’t be on your own and we often pair up new volunteers with those that have more experience and there is always a member of the volunteering team onsite to support with any issues.
Can I claim travel expenses?
Yes we will reimburse up to £12 a day for incurred volunteer travel expenses.
If I Volunteer will it lead to a job at IWM ?
You’ll certainly be in the right place to hear about upcoming vacancies, and you could pick up some of the skills needed – but we can’t promise you’ll always be successful.
I am a student and interested in work experience/ doing a placement
At the moment we are unable to offer work experience or work placements. Should any opportunities arise we will place a separate notice on these pages so watch this space!
How is IWM making volunteering accessible?
New volunteers are offered a volunteer Buddy to build confidence and familiarity with the volunteer setting and museum environment so you feel fully equipped and excited to represent IWM and its collections to its many audiences.
