Second World War Loan Boxes

Taking our collection beyond the walls of our museum, schools can book specially created loan box experiences inspired by the Second World War.

Explore what it was like to live in Britain during the Second World War and the impact it had on people’s lives and society.

Funded by Zochonis Charitable Trust, these loan boxes can be delivered by teachers in the classroom to bring history alive for pupils across all key stage groups.

Available for free from IWM North to schools within the North West region

* Each loan box measures 52.5 x 52.5 x 52.5cm and weighs 23.5kg

Extending the Loan Boxes offer

From October 2020, we are delighted to be able extend this free educational offer to local young people’s groups and community groups for non-commercial purposes. If you represent or work for a young people’s group or community group, and you are able to collect and drop off a loan box from IWM North, please contact [email protected] for more details and availability.

Responding to Covid-19 with additional safety measures:

IWM Pre-booking Controls:

  • All loan boxes once returned to IWM will be quarantined for at least five days before becoming available for booking again.
  • After five days each loan box will be externally cleaned with anti-bacterial spray and all handling objects will be wiped down using anti-bacterial spray.

Controls for loan box borrowers:

  • All items in the loan box are designated as either:

Class handling objects: this means that they can be handled by children following your school’s Covid-19 protocols. We recommend that children wear gloves or hand sanitise before touching the object and that the object is wiped down with anti-bacterial spray before and after use.

Facilitator only objects: this means that no additional measure can be used to clean the object risking cross-contamination if the object is handled by more than one person. Gloves are provided for the facilitator.

Schools should practise their own COVID -19 protocols during sessions.
