Maria Creech began an AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Award titled ‘Diversifying and decolonising conflict photography: an exploration of how accompanying textual information can influence the reading and understanding of photographs’ in October 2020. In partnership with Cardiff University’s department of Journalism, Media and Culture, her project seeks to engage critically with the language used to describe and contextualise photographs produced around British and Dutch colonial counterinsurgency campaigns in South East Asia during the postwar period (1945-60). This project explores how original captions and museum-ascribed descriptions have consciously or unconsciously supported colonial narratives and influenced audience understandings and focuses on the portrayal of diverse experiences of these conflicts across the sites of the newspaper, the archive and the museum.
