John Beales began an AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Award, entitled ‘War Stories: composure and discomposure in British veterans’ communication of their experiences of the Falklands War, 1982’ in September 2018. The partnership is between the Imperial War Museums and Keele University.

The project examines the mechanisms of physical and psychological survival adopted by the personnel of Britain’s armed forces. Using the IWM collections the project will additionally examine how the ways in which service personnel recorded their experiences contemporaneously, or post-conflict, through the mediums of diaries, letters, photographs and oral interviews have influenced both personal memory and the historical record.
