Ellis Keeber began his AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Project ‘Berlin: British Cold War City, 1945-1994’, a partnership between IWM and the University of Bristol, in October 2019. His project examines British military and civilian communities present in Berlin throughout the Cold War period, up until the withdrawal of British military forces in September 1994. Adopting a longue durée approach, and by utilising IWM’s collections of military journals, oral interview recordings, and personal papers, this social history will shed new light on the experience of British soldiers and civilians in the city often described as the centre-point of the Cold War. Avenues of enquiry currently include British relations with Berlin’s German population, the legacy of the Second World War, and the ways in which British communities engaged with Berlin’s multifaceted and multinational spaces.
