Core Criteria

- Submissions of expressions of interest need to meet the vision for the IWM 14-18 NOW Legacy Fund. The expression of interest form for those interested in the final seven opportunities is now closed.
- Proposals should explore an aspect of the heritage of conflict from the First World War to the present day.
- Primary project partners must be in the UK. We welcome joint expressions of interest with partners outside of your organisation or with non-UK potential partners.
- Expressions of interest should be submitted by organisations who are members of the War and Conflict Subject Specialist Network. The network is free to join and you can sign up here if you are not already a member.
- The commission must be a new commission; we are not currently looking to display or work with art projects that are already in train or completed.

- The expression of interest form is for organisations; we are not currently looking for submissions directly from artists. We are not currently looking for submissions directly from artists, though host organisations for the commission and artists are free to begin dialogue and collaborate on a submission. The expression of interest form should be completed by the organisation.
- We would anticipate that your commission would be finished and associated activities would be delivered within two years. IWM would support you in developing your programme rollout.
- Proposals should indicate the site, physical space, programme space, and team resource that you would commit to the project to see it through.
- Project teams should be equipped to deliver on time and to budget.

Audience Reach and Engagement
- Proposals should extend your audience reach and/or enhance the diversity of your audiences.
- Your proposal should have a reasonable display period and consider access and inclusion needs.

- Think about the impact a commission will have on your local area, and how you might use this opportunity to build deeper and longer-term relationships with your audiences.
Legacy
- Proposals should have a long-term impact on your practice, and the development of skills and knowledge within your organisation.

- Help you create connections, raise the profile of your organisation, and of arts and culture in your area.
High-Quality Artistic and Creative Experiences
- Commissions can include a broad range of high quality artistic approaches. See our FAQs for further details.
Relevance and Diversity of Commission Topics
We particularly welcome proposals that:
- Are innovative in their choice of themes, and explore new or underrepresented narratives. For example, some provocations might include; Does your commission speak for voices that aren't heard enough? Does your commission idea consider a conflict that our society knows less about?
- Explore non-traditional or highly innovative artistic practice in the context of more well-known themes.
- Explore the connections between regional, local and national stories.
Building on Partner’s Practice
- Proposals should offer something new; perhaps a new subject matter or approach for your organisation.
We particularly welcome proposals that:
- Demonstrate ambition, and align with long-term plans for the growth and development of your organisation.
Exclusions
IWM is an apolitical organisation and, as such, we are unable to support commissions that are aligned to a particular party or political group. Partners must ensure that their association with the War and Conflict Subject Specialist Network is not used for purposes that may bring IWM unfairly into disrepute.
