Project Description
Throughout the First World War Centenary, Mark Norris at Newquay Zoo researched what happened to staff from zoos and botanic gardens during the conflict, including researching individual names taken from memorials located at London Zoo and Belle Vue Zoo, Manchester. Additional research was done into the Kew Gardens Staff War Memorial by Dr James Wearn (Royal Botanic Gardens Kew) with support from archive staff based at London Zoo. Findings were published within various zoo and botanical garden journal articles, alongside a dedicated project website. Several affiliated public talks were held at Kew Gardens, zoo and botanic garden conferences and the Garden History course at the Institute of Historical Research, University Of London. The photograph shows the London Zoo Staff War Memorial.
