Project Description

This project drew on documents from Warwickshire County Record Office and was run by a team of twenty volunteers. They investigated various aspects of the First World War, including recruitment, the Home Front, letters home, the Red Cross, agriculture and the Women's Land Army, women, Belgian refugees, and commemoration. Findings from this research led to the creation of a static exhibition that was displayed at St John's Museum, Warwick, alongside a travelling exhibition that was displayed around Warwickshire. The participants also wrote articles for the 'Our Warwickshire' community website and, most importantly, compiled a searchable online database of their findings. As part of its remit, the project additionally delivered a range of workshops for schools and community groups, which incorporated loans boxes and performances. The whole initiative was part-funded through the Heritage Lottery Fund and Warwick District Council. The project photograph shows men running towards the finishing post as part of Alcester Peace celebrations in 1919.
