Project Description
'Active Arts' are a group who, over the past forty years, have offered a series of arts-themed events to the village of Countesthorpe and surrounding villages. We received a Heritage Lottery Fund grant to commemorate local aspects of the First World War. With the help of Countesthorpe & Foston Heritage Group, we put together an exhibition about the surrounding area during the conflict. Other elements of the project included events, such as a music concert run by the Helix Ensemble in Loughborough, and the involvement of school children taking part in creative writing and art-based remembrance activities. We also produced a publication to commemorate the lives of two Countesthorpe men - Private Buckingham and Captain Gee - who both won the Victoria Cross during the war. Buckingham served in the 2nd Battalion of the Leicestershire Regiment, known colloquially as the Tigers.
