Project Description
This project was started with a bursary from Ticknall Parish Council and had an organising committee of four. Our partner organisations included the local branch of Army Cadets who performed at a concert event, the Royal British Legion who provided perspex statues and other materials, St George's Church, Ticknall Village Hall, Ticknall Methodist Chapel, Dame Catherine Harpur's primary school and music students from Birmingham Conservatoire. Ticknall Village shop and three local pubs sold memorabilia mugs and had collection boxes. We had hospitality at all events at which we raised money for the Royal British Legion and Blind Veterans UK (Ticknall residents collected each Christmas from 1920 until about 1960 for the predecessor of Blind Veterans). Villagers participated in the commemorative concert, with some volunteering by providing catering, setting up the hall for and curating the exhibition, alongside providing an installation of poppies within the churchyard and running a special lecture on the legacy of World War One. The objective of this commemorative weekend event was to remember the contributions and sacrifices of those in the armed services but also those in reserved occupations, those at home and volunteering both locally and further afield. As well as remembering back to 1918, we also looked forward over the legacy of the conflict and its relevance to today. Please see the local newsletter file attached below for more information.
