Project Description

This project involved researching the impact of the First World War on the Peabody Trust, a philanthropic housing association which had 25 estates in London by 1915. Our records show that around 3,000 men who lived in Peabody properties served in the armed forces during the conflict, with about four hundred of them were killed. Every estate lost men, and four of the estates have their own war memorials. Women from the estates were also involved in war work such as serving with the Red Cross. A sole member of staff undertook this research, which was done without any funding bar an annual subscription to 'Find My Past'. The researcher has since given talks to colleagues and external audiences about the results of the research. Our website also has a brief section about Peabody and the First World War.
