Project Description

The Hyde War Memorial Trust was created to maintain the memory of the seven hundred and ten men of Hyde who died between 1914 and 1921 as a result of the First World War. Records and information about each of these individuals can be found on permanent display at Werneth Low Visitor Centre, as well as the Trust’s dedicated website (accessible via the link below). This database offers up details about who these men were, where they were born, their families, occupations and how they died. After the war, a Country Park recreational space was created in memory of these individuals, situated on a hill overlooking the town. The Hyde War Memorial Trust now administers this one hundred and fifty acres of land on Werneth Low, where the Werneth Low Cenotaph is situated on a prominent position 800ft above sea level. Memorial services are held at this location twice a year, on the Sundays nearest Peace Day, 28th June 1919, and Remembrance Sunday. Today the Trust is run by a Joint Committee of volunteers and Trustees, along with a Tameside Council Country Park Ranger, Country Park Volunteers and Trust Members from Tameside Council.
