Project Description
A study of the effect of the First World War upon the small Yorkshire community of Shipley, including telling the story of the men who served but also what was happening on the Home Front. The project is published online and includes a week-by-week digest of stories from the local newspaper, each one published exactly one hundred years after it first appeared. The project is still ongoing, with plans to publish follow up stories on subjects like what happened to disabled soldiers and those suffering from shell shock on the website. The project also staged a Somme exhibition at Shipley Library and smaller, localised displays at Windhill and Eccleshill, alongside talks that were given to local history groups. The project database and all supporting material will duly be placed in the local record office for future researchers.

Focus and Research
Resources used for research
The project was largely based on local newspaper reports with some imput from descendants of serving men. Ongoing research into subjects such as the post-war experience for disabled soldiers will require use of census returns and files held at the National Archives.
