Project Description

The 'Sheffield's Great War' event brought together six researchers on the history of the Great War in Sheffield for an event on Armistice Day, 11 November 2018 in the Memorial Hall at the Sheffield City Hall to celebrate and commemorate the contribution Sheffield made to the War effort and the effect the War had on the city. Speakers included Chris Hobbs talking about the Sheffield Zeppelin Air Raid, Sarah Holland talking about Rural and Farm Life in Sheffield during the Great War, Mike Collins talking about War Hospitals in Sheffield during the Great War, Sylvia Dunkley talking about Women's work in Sheffield, John Cornwell talking about the Sheffield Pal's Battalion, and event curator Chris Corker providing a year on year overview of Sheffield during the conflict. The event had 200 people in attendance. After bringing together additional donations with ticket sales, the event was able to donate almost £1600 to the Royal British Legion. Sponsorship was sourced from local companies and publicity support was provided by the Sheffield Star.
