Project Description

'Pocklington and District World War One Heroes' was a commemorative publication conducted by Pocklington and District Local History Group, that recorded the experience of local individuals during the conflict. From Pocklington's population of just under 3000, 300 men went off to fight. To lose 53 of those shows the great sacrifice the town made. The bravery of these men is recognised by the medals awarded for their gallantry in action, including the DCM, DFC, Military Cross and several Military Medals and Croix de Guerre. The book contains a profile of every name listed on Pocklington's War Memorial, along with a transcription of the war diary of local plumber John Brook, who survived. Extracts from the Howdenshire Chronicle and Pocklington Weekly News provide a real feeling of what war-time life in Pocklington was like. 86 local soldiers not listed in the Church Memorial Book but from nearby villages are also recorded. Talks correlating with the project were held at Pocklington Arts Centre.
