Project Description

This project involved digitising two scrapbooks complied by Flora Buck whilst she worked as a Red Cross Nurse at the Brabyns Auxiliary Military Hospital in Marple from October 1914 until May 1919. Flora utilised old catalogues of the time as the base for her scrapbooks to conserve paper (adverts for various domestic products of the period can still be seen on some pages). The scrapbooks also contain newspaper cuttings, photographs and postcards that relay the events that Flora and the rest of the Marple community found themselves caught up in during the First World War. In 2019 the fragile scrapbooks were scanned and digitally preserved by The Marple Website, so that their content could be viewed and made accessible to anyone online. The scrapbooks are available via the link below, along with an explanation of their backstory and further information about the Military Hospital, including the owner of Brabyns Estate, Fanny Hudson, who gave her home over to the war effort.
