Project Description

In 2014, the Head of Steam – Darlington Railway Museum received £42,300 from the Heritage Lottery Fund to deliver the Darlington-based project 'North Eastern Railways in World War One'. The project focused on the contribution of railway employees in the North East during the First World War. Using the museum's archive collection, a team of twelve volunteers created a searchable, online database of North Eastern Railway employees who served during the conflict. Archival documents about their wartime experiences were conserved and digitised to preserve them for future generations.
