Project Description

‘No Man’s Land: Young People Uncover Women’s Viewpoints of the First World War’ was a project publication that outlines the lives of a number of female photographers who worked during the First World War, bringing to life the story of the conflict through the eyes of women. This groundbreaking publication was created by 'New Focus' our young people’s project group. The book features images that had never been published before, including photographs taken by Mary ‘Fluffy’ Porter who joined the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps and pictures from the photo-album made by Sister ‘Josie’ Kane, who travelled to Malta to work for Queen Alexandra’s Imperial Military Nursing Service. The publication was inspired by the major exhibition ‘No Man’s Land: Women’s Photography and the First World War’ held at Impressions Gallery, Bradford from 7th October to 30th December 2017. This project was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund's 'Young Roots' scheme. Our activities were led by 'New Focus' in partnership with Impressions Gallery, with heritage partners the Peace Museum Bradford, the University of Leeds, and the First World War Centenary Partnership, led by Imperial War Museums. 'New Focus' is an award-winning young people's collective for 16 to 25 year olds from Bradford.
