Project Description

Friends of Marple Memorial Park commemorated the First World War Centenary with a timeline display in the park that illustrated the impact of the conflict upon the Marple community. Encouraging local people to find out more about local men who sacrificed their lives one hundred years ago, the information featured was also replicated on our website and via Twitter and Facebook, to share it with the widest audience possible. The timeline was approved by the Marple Area Committee and Stockport Council. Mounted on the railings at the front of Hollins House, it grew in 'real time' with the placing of a new card on the centennial anniversary of the death of each individual listed on the Park War Memorial. The display therefore accumulated over the period from 24 October 2014 - the anniversary of the first man’s death - until November 2018, to mark the end of the conflict. Having been conceived as a temporary display, the positive local reception for the timeline over the centenary period meant that it was decided to convert it into a permanent feature in late 2018, with funding for this awarded to the Friends of the Park by Marple Area Committee. The permanent display was printed by HB Printing and, as the photograph shows, it forms a focal point for local schools doing educational projects relating to First World War history and remembrance.

Focus and Research

Resources used for research

The Book 'Remembered – Marple Men who fell in The Great War' by P Clarke, A Cook and J Bintliff (this work and the research carried out by its authors was a key source for this display, and could not have been compiled without their efforts. The book is out of print but reference copies are available at Marple Library)'; the website: 'More Than A Name' compiled by John Hartley, which tells the stories of men from the Stockport area who fought and died in the First World War; the Commonwealth War Graves Commission database and website.
