Project Description

To mark the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War, Huntingdon Town Council held a two-day living history weekend. This event took place across the 27th and 28th September 2014 at Riverside Meadows in Huntingdon, to remember and commemorate those who fought and lost their lives. The two-day re-enactment event consisted of arena displays, cavalry displays, a wartime-era music wagon, a British soldier encampment, wartime-era medicine, sport that included a World War One-themed football match, charity stalls and a static display of model planes. The event concluded with a sunset service at Riverside Meadows, followed by a procession to Castle Hills where the Mayor of Huntingdon lit a commemorative Beacon. Our project partners included the 'World War One Planning Committee' at Huntingdon Town Council, Huntingdon District Council, Historical Promotions & Events Management, RAF Wyton, Huntingdonshire Archives, Imperial War Museums, the Ramsey Model Aero Club, Girl Guides, local Huntingdon schools, numerous charity and military stall holders, the Sea Cadets, HCR104fm, The Hunts Post, and St John Ambulance. As part of their broader commemoration, the Town Council also completed the World War One Roll of Honour board in Huntingdon Town Hall - which lists the names of all those who lost their lives from the area - and installed a number of commemorative benches across the town.
